I have just finished reading a very good book that is very well written, informative and interesting for anyone who wants to learn more about the US-Mexican border and the issues involved.

The title is The Border-Exploring the U.S.-Mexican Divide by David J. Danelo.

he writes with ease of readability that it almost seems like a travel book. He takes you through parts of Texas, Arizona, Mexico and California, the places that are relevent to the issue, the states that create the border with Mexico.

Large parts about the history of the area and the border in order to show how this divide has been a problem for a very long time. The cast of historic figures is well rounded, Pancho Villa, Judge Roy Bean, Geronimo and many who were not famous enough to be included in any history book or history lesson.

You will meet agents of the Border Patrol, local officials, everyday people and even panhandlers and Mexican fixers. You will learn about the drug cartels, the people who may have assisted them and those who hate them. You will meet entrepreneurs, business owners and people on the street. There are old timers and people who moved there later. You will hear stories of some of the illegals and the stories of people who help and assist them and you will meet those whose job it is to stop them before they enter.

There are two ride alongs, one with a local sherrif and one with a border agent., Mr. Danelo crosses the border a few times and meets some who once lived in America and then were deported. He visits some very scary places and some very beautiful natural areas. There are stories that show how local and federal officials work together and how they butt heads. There are stories how the miltary has helped and created problems

NAFTA is shown in both a good and bad light. How it has helped towns on both sides of the border and how it has hurt both sides.

You will see the numbers of illegals and drug runners and the estimates on the quantity of drugs that get through and how much is stopped. You will learn where the fence helped and where it will never help. There is information about water issues, farming issues and the problems associated with the two. Social problems, environmental points and other issues invovled with two countries that share a common border made up mostly by a web of waterways.

Did Mr. Danelo provide answer to these issues and problems? No, he did not. Did he try to encapsulate alll the things he learned on his travels? Yes he did that with exceptional quality and clarity.

I have learned much from reading this book and I feel that I can understand the complexity, the fear and the anger about much of this.

I have leaned much from this book and it has opend up new areas for me to learn about the area that is the U.S./Mexican border.

I jhope you will learn more about this issue, it is imporant that we go beyond the informatuion provided by media sources and poltical manipulators.

Vlad's living in south central Texas, I see first hand the problem has grown over the years. I would like to find the book you mention. There may be information in it we learned in Texas history class!

I got the book at the library. It was published by STACKPOLE BOOKS in 2008.

Thanks for the seed... Will check out the book... If you like, here are some more titles you might be interested in reading...

Drug War Zone: Frontline Dispatches from the Streets of El Paso and Juárez by Howard Campbell

Whatever It Takes: Illegal Immigration, Border Security, and the War on Terror by J.D. Hayworth

While I agree that the issue has been used far too often for political posturing, it does not diminish the fact that there are elements of this that should at the very least alarm the American public.

This looks like a wonderful book! I will go back to the bookstore and see if I can find it...

Water issues include the fact that there isn't much available, and the Rio Grande is in a heap of hurt. But, I really need to know more. Here in KY, I am torn between pity and disgust for our illegal workers. They get a rotten deal, but should they be here anyway? Sigh-- a mulit faceted issue that I need to explore at greater depth.

Issues like this are difficult to view dispassionately. At least for me!

Thanks for the great review and thanks so much for your kindness in pointing it out to me!

Good grief. It's just like you to be concerned about water issues, in particular the Rio Grande basin. This is an example of cross-border international relationships. That river irrigates acres of fruit trees in the US and has been dammed and channelized to death north of the border, with frequent disputes between the US and Mexico as the course of the river and the water table changes with human intervention. I don't see any flag waving sycophants here because its reduced to reasoned negotiation between sovereign states.

Would that the same calm and intelligence be applied to US national politics.

dowser is a hydrologist so I pointed the book out to her for her interest in water.

Your last statement says it all in my book magz, why are there not more calm and intelligent voices about many of our issues?

I do feel that we are those voices and we must speak louder than the voices that drum dissent here, on TV and the radio.

              Did I do something wrong?

If so, I'm sorry-- perhaps my comment was not well-thought out. It is not my intention to fan any flames of controversy, I promise.

              :-)

Yeah Dowser, I don't get what was meant either, sorry I called you a hydrologist and not a hydrogeologist.

No need to apologize for someones unclear message. Perhaps they will return adn clear this up for both of us. :)

5.3 Dowser, your posts are some of the most polite and well thought out on the Vine. Your name and wrong just don't go together, IMO. LOL

Thank you, both-- magz is a friend, so perhaps we just had a mis-communication. I suppose on the face of it, I look like I am taking a very broad issue and looking at it through a very narrow, water-minded viewpoint...

I'm truly sorry if I took such a HUGE issue and seemingly made into something that only has to do with water rights. :-)

Thank you both for your loving support! Magz is a good person, I'm sure he just got in on the middle of things and didn't understand how I got here. Or, perhaps my comments were insulting in some way. I certainly didn't mean them to be!

Thanks etva and Vlads dog! :-)

Since this is one of those hot button issues it could have been something like you suggest Dowser. For some of us this issues does not touch our lives like it does others.

Those who are affected should understand how this is not on our radar everyday. Yhat is why I chose to read this book, to learn about the things other Americans are going through. But I suppose they cannot get or understand our troubles were we live either.

No harm no foul if you know him Doswer, we play defense for friends when we think we have to.

                  Cheers :)

Take it easy folks. My post was a compliment. Dowser's day job she takes seriously, and does it well. I was merely juxtaposing separate border issues and how they are solved, or play out.

You know I love you Dowser.
