Ok, the new Congress is in and the first order of business is to read the Constitution out loud in its entirety on the floor. reports indicate it will cost 1.1 million dollars to do that. Let's set the money issue aside for a moment and look at the cause and what may be the effects of doing this.
Well let's just look at the cause a little.
Since President Obama was sworn in there has been a dangerous growth of outright fear mongering from partisan voices in the media, Socialism, commies under beds, loss of freedoms, sharia laws taking over, death panels, internment camps, large swaths of the populace moved to the midwest, verbal persecutions of anyone and everyone who doesn't agree with the talking heads interpretations of what is going on. Then, to offset those voices we have the other side join in on the verbal warfare and everybody must now choose a side and come out swinging. Yehahhhhh. let the word wars begin. I am one of those people who got caught up in the war and I am tired of it.
We have expended a great deal of time screaming at each other over 'boogie men' stories created by people whose job it is 'is' to make news and to keep the viewer viewing. The end result is that we are now polarized so much that nothing is clear for many, nothing is talked about or discussed in a rational manner and nothing of substance really gets done.
The Tea Party has made itself the undying passionate supporter of all things constitutional. They have taken all of the symbols of our Revolution and made them their own symbols, we don't own them anymore because we don't belong.
Never mind that other Americans love this document and these symbols of freedom as much as they do, they are the real arbiters of what the signers of this document meant and wanted for our future. Never mind that others have thoughts on this document that do not adhere to their thoughts. Never mind that non members are just as mad about the economy, jobs, health care issues, taxes and everything else under the sun. They see clearly and the rest of us are tainted because we do not join in with their causes. We are the problem and they are the solution. Join or Die people.
Sorry but there are other options than just these two. One of these options is called talking to one another and finding common ground for the common good. You scream at me, I am going to do the same, see how that works, you talk to me like a person and I do the same. It is just that simple, it is not rocket science.
So "because" of the rampant anger and partisanship on both sides of the aisle during these last few years, 40 or so new members come into the House and now we have to read the Constitution out loud to the rest of the members.
What will be the effect of this? Better government, more constitutional and scholarly work in the House, crossing the aisle and shaking hands, compromise, real dialogue, better laws?
Symbols and gestures do have substance, I just wonder what this symbol is all about. I also wonder how this will change anything for the better.
Just my morning howl, your turn. What will be the effects of doing this?
