This is a question that needs to be addressed I think. My greatest fear is getting on the highway and being killed by lazy and dangerous drivers who feel no need to follow all the laws to make driving safer for everyone on the highway. Some would say that the recent school shooting is worse because the number of innocent children who were killed but there are many highway collisions that involved school buses where a lot of those young passenger all died at once. Is this type of mass tragedy less important?
Of course no driver intends on killing others but the lack of following good driving habits and ignoring laws does show a lack of interest in not killing anyone. We now have no fault insurance which makes me laugh every time I hear that. The bulk of collisions on the highway are the fault of one or more drivers not following the rules of the road. They speed, they do not yield to oncoming traffic, they eat and talk on the phone while driving, they comb their hair and some idiots even read while driving. Once I even saw a guy in a small convertible sports car applying sunscreen on his bald head and while doing this he almost ran off the road. Now here was a guy who thought sunburn was worse than wreaking his car and possibly harming himself or others. It made me think of the analogy of walking and chewing gum being hard for some folks.
I live out in the country and the bulk of my neighbors own guns and I hear gunshots a lot. People are hunting, people are target shooting but I never think about being killed by a gun or a stray bullet. I do how ever worry that when I walk down the road some idiot is going to kill me with their car because they want to drive 70 MPH on a road marked 45 MPH. Is arriving home or to work or to the store more important than the life of another!
Recently we had to help a young girl who had slid on black ice and ran off the road. While her boyfriend and I were pulling the car out other drivers drove past and would not even slow down, they could have easily ran into us or the truck or the car. Why would they not see the danger of doing this?
Some folks like to ride their horses on the back roads and drivers do not slow down or even move over when driving past them. Do they not understand that coming up behind a horse and rider may spook that horse and cause problems?
Many teens have died here from driving too fast and not having a seat belt on and this is tragic because many could have lived if they had just buckled up first. Their whole life was a head of them but it was just not cool to use a seat belt while driving over the speed limit.
Dying in a collision on the highway is a very violent way do be killed. Why is this violent way of dying seem to be more acceptable for anyone?
