I'm A White Boy
and I'm Okay
I work all day
and make political hay.
I do not represent ALL White Boys in America but I play one on TV.
In fact many White boys annoy the crap out of me not because they are White but because they are also other males, I do hate guys who are dickheads......they give the gender a really bad reputation.
I have seen a few mentions of white heritage and culture and I felt the need to put up the definitions of both Heritage and Culture so we can learn exactly what those words mean.
Heritage- 1. Property that is or can be inherited: an inheritance.
2. Something that is passed down from preceding generations, a tradition.
3. The status acquired by a person through birth, a birthright.
Culture- 1. The totality of socially transmitted behavior patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions and all products of human work or thought.
2. The predominating attitudes and behavior that characterizes the functions of a group or organization.
Since our beginning as a group of colonies we have been the Great Assimilating Society, the gatherer and user of all cultures and all heritages. So all these traditional heritages and cultures were assimilated through the years and then held firmly in place by family, neighborhood and community and geographical area in our country.
Our language is a gatherer of new words every year. This is a cultural phenomenon that we all take part in. The heritage of our language is to take comfortable words that speak to specifics on the subject or object or idea so that we speak current jargon and are then "in the Groove, on the fast track, and Not Retro".
We throw out culture and heritage onto a historical social scrap heap all the bloody time here, we are no longer "the bees knees ya know".
Yes, much of our culture and heritage was brought here by white European immigrants but each of those select groups assimilated the other groups stuff. Thank the Pennsylvania Dutch for your Christmas Tree this year it is their tradition we all borrowed and made our own thing.
Geographically I am way different culturally than all you other crazy people who talk funny and have strange ideas and ways. My Western Pennsylvania heritage was to make fun of people from Ohio who say Dollar the wrong way. Although we had white city folks and white country folks in the family we did not share many of the same cultural interests. The Ridge Runners, as we called our wilder cousins, were a strange breed of cousin. My great uncle wore his hip waders all the time, even at a funeral. Now that is not a cultural thing the rest of the family liked too much. But we were family so we put up with that difference.
And here's the thing. It's Yinz or Yous, not You All.
So let me run down my cultural roots and heritage and see if yinz are the same or different.
Highland and Island Scottish on one side of family, back to the 11 century and before that they lived on the coast of Northern Ireland, Celtic boat people. 6 brothers came here to Eastern PA in 1746. Moved over the Allegheny Mountains to get the hell away from the Germans and PA Dutch. Settled in the wild woods of Western PA. and have been here ever since. Now within this blood line are little bits of other cultures, a bit of Italian and Jewish and Lowland Scots and English popped up in our records search. But we were country people till the Industrial Revolution gathered all the youngsters to the city, just like country chickens that are turned to factory chickens, all penned in. We never lost our wild roots, we stayed wild but adapted.
This is where the melting pot of culture and heritage started shaking up the traditions further. My Dad met my Mom and they both married outside of ethnic and religious backgrounds. Now I had a new cultural line and heritage to look into.
Northern Irish, Green through and through on my Maternal Grandfathers side, on my grandmothers side, Swedish, Pennsylvania Dutch from Alsace Lorraine who came here in the 1600s, anabaptists. The same people my other people ran away from. LOL
Now my heritage and culture is related to where I grew up, a housing project out side of Pittsburgh called Broadhead Manor. I grew up with all races and so many ethnic and religious backgrounds that it was a Smelting Pot of American Culture. I heard almost every language spoken, I ate so many types of food that you would think you lived in an international village or something. We assimilated each others stuff that we then created into new culture and heritage for our next generation.
My wife and I moved away from our culture and heritage and found a place with new culture and we are making a new heritage for our families. We are bringing them back home to where they were when they first got here and mixed with everyone else. We are bring the wild heritage from our past into the future. Assimilation begins anew.
Culture and Heritage, it just ain't what it used to be and that is exactly how it will be always be, a process always evolving.
Assimilate and create your culture and heritage or become like the Shakers and disappear.
Oh, and by the way, I did grow up in a very strong Nativist crowd of relatives, I have heard this culture and heritage junk since I was a wee boy.
I still ain't buying into it.
my Oak Tree is way different than yours by a long shot. This is how we, in my culture and heritage really say here that "your argument missed the target by a mile, NEXT Shooter".
