The answer to that question is that five out of the last seven have been lefties.
That's left handed folks. The history of presidents and handedness is rather shadowy early on, there are no real early specific references to what hand a president wrote or signed documents with. Most likely because of a numbers of things about this issue of handedness. In the 18th and 19 century left handedness was seen as a defect or disability and even as a symbol and sign of evil. It was standard practice to force people who used their left hand as their dexterous hand to use their right hand, which is called the 'dexter' hand, how ironic for us lefties to deal with that Latin lesson.
The first reference to handedness in a president was Herbert Hoover and you will not get much agreement as to its authenticity. It is rumored that both Ronald Reagan and Harry Truman were born lefties and forced in school to become right handed.
In 1992 all 3 candidates for president were lefties, George H W Bush, Bill Clinton and Ross Perot are lefties. I do remember that election specifically because of this fact.
In 1996 we again had three lefties running, Bill Clinton, Ross Perot and Bob Dole, but Dole was really forced from need to become a leftie because of a war wound.
President Obama and John McCain are lefties so again we had two lefties running for the office of president during a recent election.
The percentage of lefties in the overall population is about 10 to 11 percent.
A professor of human genetics stated in 2008 that it was "statistically significant" that " out of the last 12 presidents" six were lefties.
As a left handed person I do notice handedness all the time. I was almost forced to change my handedness in school during the late 50's, which my mother put a stop to right away because this did in fact happen to my father who had his left hand tied behind his back when he was forced to use his "good" hand instead of the BAD one, after that he had a verbal stutter for many years.
Lefties tend to do better with communication and the arts because it seems we use both hemispheres of our brain instead of just the left side or right side for many more of our functions than righties. Interesting fact, both eyes are connected to both sides of our brain which is what creates our bifocal sight but each side of our brain carries different jobs. While the brains of righties compartmentalize jobs, thoughts and actions, we lefties shift back and forth freely. A more holistic thought process some say.
We are a real minority and we are not separated my race or ethnicity or gender or country, we are all over but we only represent 10 percent of the total population.
So, are you left handed, do you have left handed family members or do you know of left handed people you are friends with or work with?
Lefties RULE.. well not all the time, YET! lol.
A shameless plug also for my nation called-Life as a Leftie.
